 What we say: The Instinct VSR takes the classic Instinct VS, but is a bit softer! Perfect for modern bouldering problems or long sport routes, where you need a bit more sensitivity through the foot.

What Scarpa Say: One of the shoes in the very poplar Instinct family line. This shoe features the same last and rand characteristics of the VS modal but using a softer midsole and Vibram XS Grip 2 rubber. This makes the VSR a softer and more sensitive alternative when compared to the other models in the range.

With a mix of microfiber and suede leather (used for the upper), this helps to prevent the shoe from stretching too much but still allowing it to mould to the foot. The VSR utilises a single strap and a thin one-piece tongue to create a secure fitting shoe.

Designed with a semi-aggressive fit and a modest size toe patch, these features help to give the VSR that all round performance fit, which we have come to love from the range.

Edging power + sensitivity

Great as an all-round pair of shoes. The XS-grip2 gives them a nice level of softness/sensitivity compared to the Scarpa VS' which lends them towards smearing and indoor climbing. That said, the shoe design helps them to retain a good level of stiffness for standing onto small edges which makes them a great versatile shoe. I've often thought these are similar to LaSpo Solutions but slightly stiffer and with a wider forefoot and better heel. I downsized 2.5 sizes in these but I'd generally recommend to downsize by 1-1.5 sizes for a very tight and aggressive fit. Downside for me is that I have worn through my pairs very quickly (likely due to the softer rubber and very aggressive downsizing, so your mileage will likely vary).

Time for a third pair

I’ve had two pairs of these so far and most likely about to buy a third. Super comfortable out of the box with hardly any break in needed. Feel very confident on tiny edges and volumes

On my second pair

Bought a pair from the volume 1 shop after trying a few different shoes on for fit and finding the perfect size. Have now bought a second pair in exactly the same size as I liked them so much. Both pairs still going strong.

the dream shoe

What can I say, I have used these for hours on end and they are my favourite all-round shoes! Fantastic for those looking for a more sensitive version of the Instinct VS, used mostly for bouldering but also plenty of sport climbing, taking the fear out of those smears!
